Meet Neelix and Ed!

Buddy Dog isn't just for dogs! They also rescue and care for kitties...Here are a couple of Kitties to remind you why to support your local shelter!! These two live in Portland, Oregon...

Neelix is pictured above, and Ed is pictured below:

R is for Random Post! And Real Maple Syrup!!

Yesterday we (Mike, Sawdust our dog and I) drove up to New Hampshire to check out a Sugar House and see how Maple Syrup is made! There is still lots of snow in New Hampshire...and we were in Southern New Hampshire -- The Sugar House was actually in Dublin. We also hung out in Nashua a bit.

We got to see the giant bucket/kettle that the sap is boiled down...and taste some syrup that had just been made! YUM! Real Maple syrup is very buttery --and I'd compare it to the difference between mass-produced chocolate vs. the real thing. Its just better.

It takes 40 gallons of sap to produce a single gallon of Syrup! The steam coming out of this building is the water being boiled out of the sap. This is the Morning Star Maple Company in Dublin:

NEW HAMPSHIRE MAPLE WEEKEND
MARCH 29TH & 30TH, 2008

Borrowed from http://www.nhmapleproducers.com/

"Each year, the New Hampshire maple industry produces close to 90,000 gallons of maple syrup. Maple sugaring time in New Hampshire runs from mid-February to mid-April.

As the frozen sap in the maple tree thaws, it begins to move and build up pressure within the tree. When the internal pressure reaches a certain point, sap will flow from any fresh wound in the tree. Freezing nights and warm sunny days create the pressure needed for a good sap Harvest.

In late February, New Hampshire maple producers tap their sugar maples by drilling a small hole in the trunk and inserting a spout. A bucket or plastic tubing is fastened to the spout and the crystal clear sap drips from the tree. It is then collected and transported to the sugar house where it is boiled down in an evaporator over a blazing hot fire. As the steam rises from the evaporator pans, the sap becomes more concentrated until it finally reaches the proper density to be classified as syrup. It is then drawn from the evaporator, filtered, graded and bottled. It takes approximately forty gallons of sap to make one gallon of pure maple syrup.

Maple syrup is made in the Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada, and the maple season usually lasts 4-6 weeks. The days and length of the sap runs depend entirely on the weather.

We hope you will visit a sugar house during the maple season and learn for yourself just how this ancient tradition is carried on. New Hampshire's maple producers take great pride in the high quality of their maple products. Many sugar houses are open throughout the year, selling their pure maple delicacies. Click on our list of sugar houses for further information."

And here's an awesome picture of Sawdust...who had a fun day too!

Treat Yourself -- Winter is OVER!

Sure, the picture above shows what we've all been seeing when we look out the window...until very recently! Now that Winter has given way to melting snow, blossoms, and sunshine, you're sure to need a little luxury Body Lotion to soften that dry Winter skin!

M Design Boutique designer Mystic Bliss Creations makes this all-natural Body Lotion in two unique fragrances. Celebrate is a lemongrass, sage and orange blend that fits right in with the explosion of Springtime scents. Dream is a lovely calming blend of lavender, rose and sandalwood which is a favorite of M Design Boutique customers.

These fragrances also come in the Bath and Shower Gel.

This is Johnny Race Car. She lives in the mountains in Colorado. She's as soft as she is cute.

Johnny Race Car is named after Johnny Briggs, who passed away 8 years ago to the day. Madisen Owen, pictured below, loved our friend Johnny who played with her when she was a little girl.

When Johnny Briggs went to "the big playground in the sky" (Madi's words)...Madi decided to name her new kitten after him. Madi loves animals and also has two dogs (Bacchus and Willie) and another cat Jack.

So here's to both Johnny Race Car and Johnny Briggs...two amazing Johnnys.

Can I get a napkin please? -- Improv Everywhere

This goes under "R" for random post! It has nothing to do with M Design Boutique besides this post...because there is something so awesome out there that I bet lots of you don't know about yet...Rather than try to explain I will just leave you with this:

Ever notice how in musicals people just break into song with no explanation...and it can be about the simple little things in life (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, anyone? "We got the MUSTARD OUT!")...

Here's what happened when this prank/improv group did just that in a mall food court in Los Angeles! http://improveverywhere.com/2008/03/09/food-court-musical/?loc=interstitialskip

I highly encourage you to watch the video...check the reactions of the patrons eating their food court delicacies!

A few of the reasons to support Buddy Dog!

On April 19th M Design Boutique is hosting a fundraising event for Buddy Dog

For those of you that live far away and can't make it...you can still participate. 50% of all proceeds from sales on April 19th --at M Design Boutique will also be donated to Buddy Dog!

Here are a few reminders why you want to help raise money!

Thanks for your participation and support! Send a picture of your dog for the next slideshow on this blog!

Meet Kai and Kobe!

This is Kai (a Staffordshire Bull Terrier) and her brother Kobe (a Brazilian Mastiff)...They share a yard...and sometimes toys, balls, nylabones, couches, waterbowls...with Sawdust, my black lab pup.

Kai runs the show around here. She's put in several years in law enforcement and would very much appreciate your support in her election campaign. She is running for Mayor...which will inevitably lead to a presidential run in 2012 -- good luck to whomever runs against her. I wouldn't dare to dream of winning a race against her. She's badass. Click on her picture for a campaign button!

Kobe boasts some awesome scars from surgery...and a totally punk rock haircut too. He barks when Kai and my puppy annoy him, but he's gentle and playful. His giant head is nice to kiss, as it is super soft. You can get him on stamps here.

Meet Kalli, A Border Collie Mix and her Feline Brother Otis

Kalli lives in Colorado, enjoying frequent walks through Bear Creek Lake Park. She spend her evenings watching for foxes and coyotes from her perch on the deck in the back yard, which overlooks the Great Plains. Kalli has allergies and takes lots of elaborate baths to keep her skin soft and clean.

Kalli shares her home with Otis, the cat pictured below. Otis only allows Kalli to give him affection in "The Love Room" which is where he eats his dinner. Otherwise, Otis prefers to call the shots and find warm places to rest from his major form of excersize -- begging for an early dinner.

Note that this photo is in "Otis Vision"

Reclaimed Rock and Roll T-Shirt Scarves

Coming to M Design Boutique later this week: A series of scarves made from reclaimed rock and roll t-shirts.
Some are also just cool logo T-shirts that couldn't be just thrown away! Among the mix the legendary Ramones, The Casualties, The Adicts, and more. These are one-of-a-kind and made from real vintage rock and roll t-shirts.

Being that these scarves are made from comfy light-weight knit T-shirts....they're perfect for Spring weather. Edgy and totally unique (one-of-a-kind, in fact)...these look cool with jeans or whatever else you'd wear to go see a rock show, hang out with friends or just the walk to class. Some of them even have a pocket perfect for your mp3 player!

At $25 per scarf through the month of April, you can afford something this cool!

And remember: Re-cycle, Re-use, and Reclaim! Go Green!

I will post photos of the scarves shortly.

St. Patrick's Day in New England

This isn't the usual "World of M" topic, but here goes!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! It is my first one here in the Boston area where there are of course...a lot of Irish people. All the local Irish Bars have bagpipers and other traditionl Irish folk bands playing today, and have throughout the weekend as well.

One year ago today we were having our going-away party in LA and preparing to move here! We arrived here on April 1st after 3,000 miles in the car with Cowboy, my stressed out kitty. We proceeded to live in a hotel for two months until moving into our current home.

Its almost Spring and the snow is melted. St. Patrick's Day '08...I suppose we should go with the local tradition and have a boiled dinner!

Here's a recipe...
(New England boiled dinner is a one pot dish consisting of corned beef, cabbage, carrots and potatoes. It is a traditional Irish-American dish to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.)

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 (5 1/2 pound) corned beef brisket
  • 2 large onions
  • 15 small white (Irish) potatoes
  • 10 carrots, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 2 heads cabbage, cored and cut into wedges
DIRECTIONS
  1. Rinse the beef brisket under cold water, and place in a large pot. Add enough water to cover the roast by 6 inches. Peel the onions, and place them in the pot with the roast. Bring to a boil, and cook for about 30 minutes at a rolling boil. Reduce heat to medium-low so that the water is at a gentle boil, cover, and cook for 3 1/2 hours.
  2. Remove the lid from the brisket. Remove onions, and cut into wedges. Return them to the pot. Add carrots to the pot, then place the cabbage over the roast. Place the potatoes on top of the cabbage. Place the lid back on the pot, and cook for another 30 minutes, until potatoes are tender. The potatoes should be immersed in the water by now, but if not, keep the lid on so they can steam.
  3. Remove the vegetables from the pot, and place in a separate serving bowl. Keep the corned beef in the pot until ready to slice and serve because it dries out quickly.
Have it with a Guinniss Beer, of course!

If you cannot attend the event, but wish to donate one of these items (click here to see the list) -- please email info@mdesignboutique.com and I will provide information on getting those donations to Buddy Dog!

Thanks to everyone helping to make this event a successful fundraiser, and a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Here's Why I'm Raising Money to Save Animals

This is my almost-six-years old cat "Cowboy" who came all the way from Istanbul to Los Angeles...and now has crossed the country in a car (meow meow meow meow, meOWWW). He's very worldly and has a pink nose and pink toes and white boots. He hates going to the doctor.

This is my exactly one-year old puppy "Sawdust" who came from Indiana all the way to Connecticut where we picked him up and brought him to Mass. in June of 07, right after we moved into our place. He likes um...everything, and very much. You can tell by his full-body wag. He's a rock star.

Spring's BIG Trend -- BIG ACCESSORIES!

So...I'm no authority on fashion...just ask my boyfriend or anyone else who sees me regularly...But I do have an eye for awesome stuff. Seriously...I do! That paired with my ability to read about fashion....have brought me to this: Big Crazy Accessories are the current trend! Wow! How great for a person who wears Big Crazy Accessories all the time anyway! I'm hip! For now at least.

Enough about me though...I'm writing because I want to announce that I'll be adding a new designer to M Design Boutique! She's from California and she's getting lots of attention from the fashion world...and me! I mean, a vintage "My Little Pony" necklace?!! Someone pinch me!

The Gift to Keep on Giving!

Starter Charm Bracelets

Starting a charm bracelet for someone special makes a great gift. You can start a bracelet with one or two charms and keep adding at every special event, or “just because”. Here are some ideas:

Bride's Maids: Start a bracelet for each attendant with a charm that best represents her, or your friendship.

Teens: Parents can start a life-long tradition with their daughters by starting a bracelet for her on her first teen birthday. Pick a charm for a trip you went on, her favorite sport, etc.

Wives and Girlfriends: Score major points by giving her a little heart charm hanging from a bracelet. Great for an anniversary, or just because! A keepsake alternative to flowers...or to go WITH the flowers!

Moms and Grandmas: Charms are a great way to remember important family events, travel and hobbies.

Brides-to-Be: Charms make a great gift from her fiance or future mother in law. A flower like she'll have at the wedding, a champaign glass or a heart!

Best Friends: Start a bracelet for each of you with a special charm only the two of you can appreciate.

New Moms: Starting a bracelet for the birth of a child is a cherished way to commemorate the new arrival.
